DALLAS, May 10, 2012—The Verizon Foundation awarded Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation a grant to expand its domestic violence and relief services to underserved Muslim women and children in Dallas and Collin Counties. Verizon presented the $10,000 grant, which will help fund the summer 2012 opening of the Peaceful Oasis shelter, at Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation’s Mother’s Day Luncheon on May 10.
“We are proud to contribute to Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation so they can provide a safe haven for victims who face significant cultural and language barriers to accessing mainstream services,” said Michelle Robinson, president of Verizon’s southeast region. “Protecting victims and building awareness of this issue in every community, every language and every cultural group is essential so we can end domestic violence as the number one health issue facing women in America.”
Verizon Foundation awarded the grant at a Mother’s Day Luncheon, hosted by Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation at the DoubleTree Hotel in Dallas’ Galleria area on May 10. At the event, Executive Director Hind Jarrah led attendees in celebrating the organization’s accomplishments empowering Muslim women and their families and outlined the significant work that needs still to be done to support this underserved community. In addition, Dallas Women’s Foundation President & CEO Roslyn Dawson Thompson provided a keynote address on the role of women’s organizations in affecting change in society.
Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation Executive Director Hind Jarrah said, “We are extremely grateful for this generous grant from the Verizon Foundation, which will enable Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation to reach more families in need with specialized services and multilingual professional staff to help them break free from violence while remaining a part of their faith-based communities and creating peace in the home.”
Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation is the first and only organization in North Texas serving the specific needs of Muslim victims of domestic violence. The Peaceful Oasis shelter, scheduled to open this summer, will provide women and their children a safe haven from abuse in a setting where traditions important to a Muslim family are supported, 14 different languages and dialects are spoken and staff understand the cultural dynamics in a Muslim household.
The shelter is an extension of Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation’s broad scope of domestic violence and social services, which include safety planning, a crisis hotline, financial/rental assistance, counseling, legal services and transitional housing to address the continuum of domestic abuse victims’ needs. Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation’s strategic approach to family violence also includes prevention, intervention and community education, including an annual domestic violence awareness day during Ramadan and workshops for both mainstream domestic violence service providers, Islamic organizations and other faith communities. Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation trains religious leaders, mainstream domestic violence service providers, law enforcement and district attorneys to become familiar with the unique needs of this diverse community.
Those experiencing abuse are encouraged to call Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation’s crisis hotline at (972) 880-4192 for confidential counseling from professional, multilingual staff. For more information about the organization or to support its efforts, visit www.tmwf.org.
